I always feel bad when I hear people say they “can’t cook.” I mean as far as I am concerned if you can eat, you can cook. Yes, some people have extraordinary palates and some people have crazy skills in the kitchen…but for the majority of everyday folks leading everyday lives…we are all capable of cooking!
The key, I believe is to not have so much fear. I mean YOU know what YOU like….what tastes and flavors appeal to you. So all you need to do is think about what flavors and what combinations of flavors you are putting together…do they appeal to YOUR particular taste-buds (or your family’s tastes)? Once you have the basics of food safety (internal temps, cross contamination, hot foods hot and cold foods cold ect) you should feel free to experiment…make an attempt. The worst that happens is you don’t like it and so therefore won’t make that dish again. I do it all the time!!
Another fear is living up to some imaginary standard that “they” won’t approve of. I don’t know who “they” are but really they should keep “their” noses out of your cooking. I am a busy, busy mom and wife, I work full time and most minutes of my day are accounted for. So do I feel bad if I take a shortcut when I cook? No. As long as I am cooking with love and passion I don’t. When I buy packaged Crepes instead of making my own (which I know would be better but I also know that if I had to make them by hand I might not make the dish at all due to time/mess/energy). So please try to be a fearless cook in your kitchen!
